Missouri State ParksFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, AUG. 7, 2019 – Peggy Buhr, director of the Bates County Museum will present “Order No. 11 – Desperate Days and Hard Travel: Recollections of Women” at Battle of Island Mound State Historic Site at 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22.

On Aug. 25, 1863, General Thomas Ewing issued the most infamous military order of the Civil War in western Missouri. General Order No. 11 commanded the forced removal of people throughout four counties, with Bates County being the only one that was totally vacated.  The order was highly controversial and there was immediate reaction to the cruelty visited upon the citizens of the region that became known as the Burnt District.  Learn more about the accounts from women who lived in the Burnt District at that time.

Battle of Island Mound State Historic Site is located at 4837 NW County Road 1002, Butler, in western Missouri.  For more information, please contact Stockton State Park at 417-276-4259.
