CWRTWM Day Trip to Osceola, MO
Sat, SEP 12, 2015, 09:00am - 05:00pm

A day trip to Osceola, MO, sponsored by the Civil War Round Table of Western Missouri.

Meet at the Blue & Grey Book Shoppe, 106 E. Walnut Street, Independence, MO. There is street parking on Walnut at 9:00 a.m. but the city lot to the west is now used for the Farmers’ Market. We will carpool to Osceola and have very knowledgeable guides such as Richard Sunderwirth who wrote two good books about the burning of Osceola.

We will have a special home-cooked lunch at an area church with barbequed brisket and baked chicken breast, baked potato, green beans, salad, rolls, beverage and chocolate or coconut pie.

The cost for transportation and lunch is $25. If you want to drive yourself and meet us at Osceola Cheese Company at 11:00 a.m., you may reserve lunch only for $16.

Send checks to:

CWRTWM
P.O. Box 3019
Independence, MO 64055

Deadline for lunch reservations is noon on September 9, 2015. You can call Beverly Shaw at (816) 225-7944 even if you have not mailed your check yet.

Itinerary:

Our first stop will be the Osceola Cheese Company to use the nice restrooms and stretch your legs a minute. We suggest that you not buy your cheese until the end of our day so you don’t have to bring an ice chest to refrigerate it. However you can sample a few varieties on our first stop. It’s located at the outskirts of Osceola at 3700 NE Highway 13, Osceola, MO.

Another guide, Rick Reed, will meet us there to take us to the Missouri Brigade Monument at Sauk River Camp (p. 26 in our “Monuments” book). This granite monument in the shape of the state of Missouri is dedicated to the Missourians who served in the Confederate army. From there we will go to the First Assembly of God church at 3845 NE Old Highway 13 (intersection of NE Old Highway 13 and NE 451 Road) to have lunch.

After lunch Richard Sunderwirth will be taking us to the Museum, the marker on the Courthouse lawn (p. 23 of our “Monuments” book), the Osceola Historic Cemetery, (p. 24-25 of our “Monuments” book), and a private home built in 1840 and added on to in 1860 where Jim Lane and officers were invited for Christmas dinner. If you want to read about the burning of Osceola prior to our trip, Richard Sunderwirth’s second book on the subject is called Osceola, Missouri, The Burning of 1861 and is available from Amazon.com. I’m sure Richard will be willing to autograph your copy and also the earlier book called The Burning of Osceola. The Round Table has a copy of the 2013 book that can be lent to members for no longer than 10 days. Call Beverly Shaw at (816) 225-7944 to reserve it.
