Dispersal of the Free State Topeka Legislature

The Lecompton Reenactors portray this dramatic Independence Day 1856 event in front of the Free State Capitol. On this date, Army Colonel Edwin Vose Sumner, then in command of Fort Leavenworth, marched 400 troops on horseback to Topeka to break up the Free State legislature assembled under the antislavery Topeka Constitution. (Approx. 30 minutes).


Free. Visitors are welcome to tour Constitution Hall.
