Jim Rehard of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources will screen the video “The Battle of Island Mound” which tells the story of the first time an African American unit fought in the Civil War. Companies of the First Kansas Colored Volunteers fought in Bates County against a group of Confederate guerrillas and new recruits.
