Commemorate Olathe 1865

A presentation on mourning and funerals as a reenactment of the wake of Susan Adair Henderson, Lucinda Mahaffie’s mother. The formal parlor will be decorated for mourning.


A horse-drawn hearse will help complete the funeral reenactment at the Olathe Memorial Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Park at Northview Elementary School, 905 N. Walker, Olathe, KS. Themed tours of the cemetery from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Gravestone symbolism, notable trees, history of the cemetery, and notable citizens). Spiritual songs by the Second Baptist Church of Olathe from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. At 3:30 p.m., Tom Rafiner will present from his book Caught Between Three Fires which focuses on the Border Wars. The Sons of Union Veterans will assist with the closing ceremony. Rain or Shine.


Please be sure to visit the GAR Monument and Memorial Circle composed of an eight foot tall soldier surrounded by a memorial circle which includes the Judy brothers of Pleasant Hill, MO who were shot by Quantrill’s raiders just as they left the Union Army recruiter’s office wearing their new Union coats. Their father was Captain Reason A. Judy, Cass County MO Home Guard (from page 8 & 9 of Civil War Monuments and Memorials in the Greater Kansas City Area).


Admission is free for all events. Refreshments by the Grace United Methodist Church will be available for purchase at the cemetery.
