The Intent of the Spanish to Stop the Lewis and Clark Expedition
Thu, FEB 22, 2018, 07:00pm

DAN STURDEVANT PRESENTS:

Dan is a singer-pianist who is described by music partners and audiences as“ velvet-voiced,” “charming,” “a splendid pianist and accompanist.”  Dan enjoys live performances, adapting to each audience. ...

Dan is connected to the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and his program will focus on the intent of the Spanish to stop the Lewis and Clark expedition.

"The Spanish surely intended to stop Lewis and Clark.  Starting in 1804 and from Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Spanish sent four expeditions towards the Missouri River.  The first Spanish expedition headed across the plains with 52 people; the second with 104 people; the third with 300 and the fourth started with over 600 people.  Each failed---Spanish leadership indecision, Indian attack, desertions.  And Lewis and Clark appear to have never known the Spanish were trying to stop them.  And the Spanish had good reason to try to stop the American expedition.  The Spanish alleged the 1803 Louisiana Purchase was an invalid transfer and the Spanish may have been right."
