Arrow Rock, Mo. — The Friends of Arrow Rock begins its annual First Saturday Lecture Series with a discussion about hemp and its importance to the 19th century economy of the region. The free, one-hour lecture takes place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Arrow Rock State Historic Site Visitor Center.

Prior to the Civil War, much of Arrow Rock's prosperity was tied to the production of hemp and the trade of that agricultural crop. In his talk, "Following Hemp Along The Santa Fe Trail," historian and educator Chris Nelson will speak about the controversial crop's intriguing history, how it shaped early Arrow Rock’s economy and farming practices, and ongoing research into this plant's potential ... well beyond its notorious use as a recreational drug.

The 2017 Lecture Series is sponsored by the Friends of Arrow Rock and funded by a special gift from Pamela Parsons, former Friends of Arrow Rock Education Director.

Following the lecture, the Experience Arrow Rock tourism committee will host a chili luncheon at Arrow Rock’s Old Schoolhouse at the corner of Eighth and Main Streets. The luncheon is a fundraiser for the group, which produces the town’s annual brochure and puts on many of Arrow Rock’s most popular events, including the Heritage Festival. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Attendees will get a big bowl of chili, plus cornbread and drink for $7.50, and can add on a homemade dessert for an additional $2.50.
