JOHN BROWN IS COMING TO INDEPENDENCE! The Civil War abolitionist as portrayed by Kerry Altenbernd will be the speaker at the monthly membership meeting of the Civil War Round Table of Western Missouri on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at 7 p.m. The presentation is free and open to the public at the Village Heights Community of Christ Fellowship Hall, 1009 Farview Drive (one block north of 24 Highway in the Susquehana area), Independence, Missouri. Kerry Altenbernd is a third generation native of Douglas County, Kansas and attended high school in Lawrence, Kansas. He graduated from the University of Kansas with two bachelor degrees and has a Master of Library Science degree from Emporia State University. In 2002 he became involved in protecting the Battle of Black Jack Civil War site near Baldwin City, Kansas. This pre-Civil War engagement on June 2, 1856 involved John Brown and Kerry began to reenact the controversial abolitionist in 2006. He has received awards from the Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area as the 2015 Billings Most Valuable Partner and from the Kansas! magazine in 2013 for Kansas’ Finest.
